Is it just me, or is there a lot of pressure on parents to make autumn epic for our kids?
Like, yes, I want them to have the quintessential, cozy fall, full of pumpkins and caramel apples and corn pits. But also—we’re in Florida. It’s still 80+ degrees outside. And my kids are not old enough to be trusted with a large knife. That means I’ll be carving several pumpkins while they choose the scary movie that will keep them up all night.
Honestly, why warm apple cider on the stove when you can warm yourself on the beach instead?!
It’s not everyone’s cup of (iced) tea, but fall in Florida makes for some unique seaside adventures. And if you’re considering selling your home next year, it’s also the ideal time to catch up on renovations. This weather is perfect for cleaning up your landscaping, upgrading your AC, or even painting your house’s exterior.
For more of an autumn hygge vibe, indoor renovations are also an option. Considering a full kitchen update? Simply crank the AC, put a splash of pumpkin spice creamer in your coffee, and voila—you’re ready to tackle those new cabinets, countertops, and appliances. (If you feel yourself crashing before you can get to the new light fixtures, the answer is a cream cheese-filled pumpkin muffin. It’s a sugar addict’s world—we’re just living in it.)
Another renovation to consider this season is new windows. Whether your house feels dark and gloomy or damp and drafty, updated windows can help. Not only will they give your home a whole new look, but they’ll also lower your energy costs. That’s a gift to both you and potential buyers.
As a realtor, I’m constantly reminding my clients that a fresh coat of paint works wonders for a home. If you’re looking to add value to your property before listing, whip out those paint rollers or hire one of our excellent local contractors to give your walls a spruce. It may not sound as glamorous as taking family photos in an apple orchard, but trust me: it makes a difference in the overall appeal of your house.
When deciding where to direct your energy this fall, remember that epic experiences come in many forms. Carve those pumpkins, drip caramel down your chin, and for goodness’ sake, hit the beach. But make time for the “real life” stuff as well—the cleaning and updating and possibly sweating. There’s something quintessentially human about these things.
Your kids won’t remember every corn maze or seasonal treat, but they will remember the effort you put into building a life for them. If that means renovating and moving, let them get involved. “Pumpkin spice and everything nice” looks good on a coffee shop chalkboard, but reality isn’t always so picturesque.
I think the true magic of autumn lies in tidying up, simplifying, and preparing for the joys ahead.
